What is Dental Crown

A crown or ‘cap’ is used to completely cover a damaged tooth and may be used for aesthetic or functional reasons to restore it to its natural colour, shape and strength.

Besides strengthening a severely broken down tooth, crowns can also be used to improve the appearance, shape and alignment of teeth.

Crowns are often used to strengthen root canal-treated teeth as these teeth are more brittle and likely to fracture.

Crowns may also be used in cases of large irritable fillings, ageing teeth or improper bite due to excessive grinding of teeth.

There are three types of crowns that can be placed:

  • Gold crowns which are the strongest but are the least aesthetic and best used on back teeth.
  • Porcelain bonded to metal crowns that are aesthetic, but very opaque looking and may give a black gum line over a period of time
  • Porcelain crowns
  • Emax Crowns are Long lasting, highly aesthetic, more and more popular. Emax crowns possess an ideal blend of translucency and lifelike appearance, that makes them suitable for restoration of front teeth and some back teeth with favourable bite.
  • Zirconium is becoming one of the most chosen materials for full porcelain dental crowns. These crowns are so strong that they will not corrode and there will not be any black gum line that usually appears when porcelain fused metal crowns are used. There are many forms of Zirconium crowns and some of them could be placed in the front of the mouth.
